New Ways I'm Warping My Kid
Roo’s favorite song right now is Alejandro by Lady Gaga.
I blame myself. I have abysmal taste in music.
My favorite tape (yes, I’m that old) was Lionel Richie’s Can’t Slow Down when I was a kid. When I joined a BMG tape club in middle school, I listened to Bobby Brown and Color Me Bad and Paula Abdul.
In college, I somehow managed to channel a 12 year old girl and had the entire Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, and Spice Girls collection. There may have been Leanne Rimes dance remixes involved.
When I moved from Texas to Seattle, I can honestly say that I got to point where I wasn’t totally ashamed of my taste in music for a little while. I mean, I was never the first person to hear of a band or anything, but I owned Tom Waits and Spoon.
Then I had Roo.
Instead of becoming more mature in my music tastes or expanding my children's music library beyond Caspar Babypants, Pandora is now an alphabetized version of my shame.
Black Eyed Peas. Katy Perry. Ke$ha. Lady Gaga.....Justin Bieber.
I’ve hit rock bottom. I know this.
And I’m passing it on to Roo, like a disease. She is signing quite a bit now and ‘music’ is in her vocabulary. She points to the iPad and waits until I have a good boom-boom-thud going before she’s satisfied.
Here’s hoping she develops her father’s taste in music soon.
