New Favorite Parenting Book
This is a blog post by Verity Mom finalist, Timara Freeman-Young
Every once in a while, I come across a book that totally rocks my world. Sarah Napthali's Buddhism for Mothers of Young Children wrapped it's fierce loving hands right around my world and shook it 'til all the yuckies fell away. I was left with the tender heart of goodness - oh, and HOPE - I was also left with a sack full of hope.
Not just for Buddhists or Buddhist wannabes, this book will appeal to any parent who has ever wondered about the eternal questions like, "Who am I?" and "How can I do best by my children and myself?" For real, this is the stuff! Using Buddhist principles to gain insight into parenthood (and just plain living), this book and it's author are true gems; Napthali is humble, deep without trying and insightful without airs. Three cheers for Sarah! I wish she were my neighbor but, being separated by at least one ocean and the fact that we haven't met, I'll have to settle for her book gracing my bedside table for the next 10 years.
Here's one of her (paraphrased) questions that I can't seem to get away from: "If you aren't practicing living in the present, what are you practicing?" For me, the answer is most often, anticipation, making lists and wishing. Not exactly what I hope to be modeling for my son. Today, I'll be practicing gratitude as there is much to be grateful for....like this book! As my (sadly) consumption-loving child would say, "Buy it!!"
