Falling in Love Again

Snow days hold a particular appeal to me.

When I was a kid growing up in rural Idaho, it was a big deal to have a snow day.The power could be out and Mr. Novotny would still run class until after lunchtime. Knowing this, we'd all wear our snow pants to class.

Cowboy Up was a very real way of life.

I remember having one weather day, and it was for ice. The cars parked next to the school had all slid slowly into each other and were interlocked like puzzle pieces. The football team would get between two cars, push one out, and then go to the next.

Now it is easy to get the lawsuit jitters but that's just not how you roll in a small town.

So when it snows in Seattle, I feel like it goes from a bustling, caffeinated metropolis to a series of interconnected small towns.

A car gets stuck and random pedestrians will push. Our hills become a series of sledding opportunities. Each person you pass says hello and no one is wearing ear buds.

Giddy.

Everyone just seems giddy and in love with the city.

On Facebook, I saw a photo with the title "Even in the snow, Seattle is a beautiful place" and someone remarked,

"This is all very interesting as a sociological study. Note the sense of exceptionalism and self-regard among native Seattle dwellers (Seattlites? Seattlans?)"

They could have easily been looking at a couple canoodling in a restaurant or a new parent regarding their perfect perfect perfect baby.

Yes, we have a sense of exceptionalism and self-regard because we're falling in love. I feel like we're in love with Seattle during our three(ish) months of summer, but a snow day concentrates that love, making it more palpable and intense, like the beginning of a love affair.

So, Puget Sounders (Puget Soundites? Soundans?) show your love.

Send your pictorial love letter or vote at my Snowpocalypse page by January 27th.

Winner gets $25 to Starbucks so you can jump back into being caffeinated when the snow melts.

Lovingly & Freezingly,

Danielle
